Power Lunch Lecture Series
|
This is a 10-week seminar series with each siminar lasting about one hour. These sessions can be scheduled during office hours, employee lunchtime or after each business day. The series design, which schedules one seminar per week, allows the participants ample time to practice and implement what they have learned into their personal and professional lives during the week. 1. What does your job mean to you?To ensure that each workday continues to be vibrant and exciting, it is essential to rediscover why you chose the job in the first place. In doing so, you rekindle a sense of purpose in what you do, clarify the added incentives beyond the paycheck that your job entails, and make clear choices about what you consider valuable.2. What do you actually do?It is important to distinguish the difference between the duties of a job and the daily activities or skills used to accomplish each task. This allows individuals to establish clarity in what they do each day and to identify their transferable skills; helping them distinguish whether or not they are on the right career path or to help them determine which path they are best suited for.3. Prioritizing vs. compromising. Many of my clients say that they have many interests and have a difficult time deciding which ones to choose as a career choice. They also say that they have too much do at work and often feel overwhelmed when deciding how to get it all done. The art of prioritizing should be differentiated with compromising. Prioritizing is setting things up in order of importance without giving anything up. Compromising requires that one give up something. Each is valuable and learning when to use them and how benefits everyone.4. Say what you mean.To be an effective communicator, a person needs to better understand the difference between dialogue and debate. It is also important to know when you might be caught in defensiveness instead of simply explaining yourself clearly. Learning the habitual tendencies of ones thinking allows an individual to be in complete control of their total self. These distinctions are crucial to harmonious exchanges during and outside of work.5. Establish high levels of motivation.Everyone at one time or another will find themselves lacking the necessary push to fulfill the high demands of a job they might be in or to follow through with their career dreams. Discovering the difference between internal motivation and external motivation allows one to establish high levels of empowerment. Once this is established, the result is individuals in complete command of their situations.6.Learning to embrace change. There is but one constant in life; change. This is an undeniable fact, yet it is the one thing that causes people the most stress. Learning to understand the functions of change and its naturalness within the realm of our daily activities permits individuals to embrace it versus fear it. Also learning to function with paradox allows individuals to produce the most out of their “total self.”7. Create a healthy competitiveness. The idea of harmony co-existing with competitiveness seems to be the ultimate contradiction. Yet, a healthy level of competitiveness is the very thing that drives an individual to achieve greatness. At the same time, an unhealthy level of competitiveness spawns destruction and conflict, which allows for only minimal short-term gains. Learning how to support and encourage each other while competing for the same goal allows for greater rewards in the long run.8.Developing and achieving goals. The first step to achieving goals is to establish them without figuring out how they will be accomplished. Worrying about the “how” often hinders individuals from going for the “stars,” or “gold.” Everything begins with an idea and learning to open up to the unrealistic allows for creativity, spontaneity, and innovation. Learning to focus on “the what” before “the how” is the name of maximum achievement in all we do.9. Effectively managing stress. The best way to manage stress is to understand its foundation; where it comes from. Whether individuals want to admit it or not, stress begins with perception. The way we perceive a situation is the origin of stress. Of course that doesn't mean that changing ones perception will eliminate stress. Eliminating stress would mean that we would stop being human. Learning to understand the origin of stress allows individuals to effectively manage the difficult situations that they encounter in their professional and personal lives.10. Balancing home and work.Fulfillment can only be achieved by creating a healthy balance between our work lives and our personal lives. This is done through setting realistic boundaries and understanding the exact lifestyle we wish to experience. As simple as it sounds, it is not always easy to do everything we say that we are going to do. Yet, this simple task is the key to fulfillment and ultimate happiness.
